Photonics is a global field, with established industries functioning efficiently based on highly interconnected multinational and multicultural teams, combining technical and capabilities across very long distances. Rapid growth, new application fields, new discoveries and the next generation of scientists and technologists are emerging across the globe, with much exciting progress happening in regions that have only recently entered the photonics field.

The IEEE Photonics Globalization Committee highlights here in this special symposium some of the excellent work in photonics that is happening world-wide, with special emphasis on scientists in both emerging and established regions as well as those that could benefit from closer international cooperation.

In a series of invited talks, eminent scientists from different global areas will summarize progress in their field, present an overview of photonics developments in their region and discuss collaboration opportunities.
