This year’s STEM Luncheon will support IEEE Photonics Society initiative called, “Iluminando el Futuro”. Iluminando el Futuro’s purpose is to inspire members and volunteers, regionally and internationally, to serve as K–12 mentors in their native languages. Studies show that the concept of Social Identity Theory, based on a strong sense of connection to a specific group (ethnic, national, religious, regional), and maintaining your first language are critical to positive esteem and sense of belonging.

The goal for the initiative is to celebrate such culture in STEM and allow local and international members to give back to their home countries.

In this session, participants will learn how to provide formal and systematic training to local volunteers in hopes of becoming STEM Ambassadors of the Society. Hands-on instruction will be provided as well as a presentation on how to conceptualize, design and implement simple, scientific concepts in a friendly and accessible way.

RSVP is required through conference registration. Lunch to be provided.
